A Partnership between

ILM & Technical Digital Media

divider

Intent

While learners may enjoy producing creative media, they sometimes question how these projects translate into actual entertainment industry roles. Disney’s brief gave learners the chance to create original digital media content inspired by the brand’s storytelling, allowing them to apply professional production processes to a globally recognised creative context.

Implementation

Learners explored ILM’s creative approach and audience engagement strategies before developing concepts for digital media assets such as promotional graphics, animations, or short-form videos. Working individually or in small teams, they planned, produced, and refined their work using industry-standard software. Finished pieces were reviewed against Disney’s brand standards, with peer and tutor feedback simulating a professional review process.

Impact

Learners experienced the discipline of working within strict brand guidelines while maintaining creative originality. They improved their technical skills, learned about global media production standards, and built confidence in presenting and justifying their creative decisions.

Learner Quote:

“I’ve always loved ILM’s work, but this made me realise how much thought and detail go into every piece of media they make. I realised how I can contribute to the movie industry with the skills I have learned, great for my portfolio and CV!”

Teacher Quote:

“ILM were really impressed with the standard of 3D modelling on display. The learners showed real creativity in developing their own designs while still meeting the brief, and they presented their work with a maturity and professionalism well beyond expectations for beginners.”

Employer Quote:

“We were really impressed by the learners’ creativity and professionalism. They approached the project with the same mindset we expect from our own design teams — balancing innovation with real-world considerations like accessibility and sustainability. It was exciting to see them thinking not just as learners, but as future industry professionals.”

Further key concepts

While the primary focus was on planning, managing, and delivering a professional-standard media production, the activity also reinforced a wide range of other concepts from the Cambridge Technical specification.
These included applying project management methodologies, understanding audience engagement, refining outputs through iterative feedback, and maintaining creative originality within strict professional frameworks. Learners also practised evaluation against professional criteria and developed confidence in presenting their creative decisions. By embedding these elements in a real-world professional context, the project provided excellent retrieval practice, ensuring that learners could revisit and apply prior knowledge in an engaging and memorable way.
