Intent

The purpose of this one-week placement at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure was to provide a Year 10 learner with first-hand exposure to the realities of the construction and engineering industry. The placement aimed to connect classroom learning to live industry practice, develop employability skills, and inspire future career aspirations by embedding the learner within a professional workplace.

Implementation

The placement began with an induction on site safety and environmental conditions, setting the foundation for working on a live site. The learner was introduced to construction planning alongside experienced engineers, gaining insight into how major projects are initiated and coordinated. During the week, the learner toured a live site with project managers, explored engineering design, and observed contractor inductions to see collaboration between organisations. A highlight was meeting a current engineering apprentice from LDE UTC, who shared their journey and acted as an authentic role model. Towards the end, the learner observed site inspections with major partners, including Transport for London and Balfour Beatty, experiencing multidisciplinary teamwork. Discussions with senior managers gave valuable perspectives on leadership, while a visit to the DLR Beckton Control Centre showed how transport systems are managed. The week concluded with a session on Morgan Sindall’s Social Value policies, reinforcing community impact and sustainability goals.

Impact

The placement enabled the learner to strengthen key employability skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, while gaining the confidence to operate in professional environments. Experiencing the complexity and collaboration required in major infrastructure projects gave them a deeper understanding of how theory translates into practice. Encounters with apprentices and senior leaders highlighted the full range of career pathways within the sector, leaving the learner inspired to pursue a future in engineering with a clearer sense of progression and opportunity.

Teacher Quote:

“It was wonderful to see how the learner was able to flourish during their placement. They took the theoretical skills developed in the classroom and applied them confidently to the workplace activities. The experience showed just how powerful these opportunities are in bridging learning with real-world application.”

Employer Quote:

“We were impressed by the learner’s maturity and genuine willingness to do well. Their enthusiasm and professionalism reflected the strong preparation provided by the college. Further key concepts

Throughout the placement, key concepts were addressed, providing valuable retrieval practice in a real-world setting. While the main focus was on understanding workplace culture, safety, and professional roles, the experience also strengthened broader employability and life skills. Learners practised adapting to new environments, managing their time efficiently, and communicating with a variety of professionals across different roles and levels of seniority. Observing teamwork between contractors and engaging in discussions about sustainability helped them connect classroom learning with wider ideas such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and social responsibility. These experiences made the knowledge and skills more memorable and meaningful, giving learners confidence for both exams and future careers.
