Intent

An opportunity to introduce Year 9 learners to a sustainability-linked project where they create presentations and learn more about project management. Formula E has been recognised as the world’s most sustainable sport for three consecutive years and provides an exciting starting point. Aiming to accelerate sustainable human progress through electric racing, Formula E is reshaping the sporting landscape. Learners were visited by the Strategy & Business Development Director, a Learning Operations Intern, and a Race Procurement Manager, who led an engaging session for them.

Implementation

Learners were introduced to the essential elements of success in a thriving Formula E team and were encouraged to consider all these aspects when challenged to design their own team. Consideration had to be given to the name choice, branding, values, race plan, uniform, and budget. The key elements were then presented to the judges and received feedback.

Impact

In addition to providing learners with an exciting insight into the world of Formula E racing and introducing them to different aspects of business management, skills such as teamwork, project management, coordination, and presenting were also developed.

Learner Quote:

Year 9 learner shared, “It was very interesting because I learnt about a sport that I didn’t know about before. The activity was great because I got to work with people I don’t normally work with, and we came up with some great ideas.”

Teacher Quote:

“What impressed me most was how quickly our learners adapted to a new and unfamiliar industry context. They didn’t just meet the challenge, they embraced it, showing maturity in teamwork, creativity, and decision-making. Formula E gave them the chance to step outside their comfort zone, and they demonstrated the same drive and excellence we see in the classroom, but in a whole new way.”

Employer Quote:

“The passion and originality the learners brought to this project were inspiring. They approached the task with energy, embraced the importance of sustainability, and showed us how the next generation already thinks differently about the future. We left impressed by their ideas and encouraged by the talent we saw.”

Further key concepts

The main focus was on sustainability in the motor industry; the activity also reinforced a broad range of concepts pertinent to BTEC Engineering Mechatronics. Learners practised project planning, resource management, and teamwork, while also increasing their awareness of branding, marketing, and commercial considerations in engineering projects. They applied problem-solving and presentation skills, connecting technical understanding with professional behaviours expected in industry.
